Bowman Information
Portal

The Bowman Information Portal is a
comprehensive Web application conceived, designed, developed and delivered in
less than 4 weeks. It has over 50 pages drawing data from 5 different
database sources.
It is reported the site has saved Defence
over £4 million and has cut the time that personnel take to complete some tasks
from 5 to 6 hours down to minutes.

Despite being a comprehensive web
application, containing a vast array of information and functionality, no
training was required by users. One of the key facets of the design was to make
the user interface simple and intuitive.

As a data centric site searching hundreds of
thousands of lines of data, the site has been designed to return data with
minimum delays. Most queries are returned in a few seconds, enhancing the
user experience.
A pre-existing site providing a fraction of the
functionality, utility or data took between 4 and 6 minutes to return the data
from a single query, and was only available to a few people.
This internal MOD website (only accessible
from MOD computers) has proven to be exceptionally popular and welcomed by its
users. It received over 120,000 hits within the first 3 month period after
delivery with 8 minutes per visit average time on site, and has continue to
improve on this number of users and time spent on site each quarter. Put in to perspective, that is more hits than serving members in
the Army (its key target audience) per quarter.
I would like to thank several people for all their support in
making this happen you know who you are, and a special thanks goes to several
members of the BATCIS IPT for all their wonderful support and assistance - I
wish you all the best for the future!
